Step 1: Get the old one off

Wrap a cloth around the connection first — grabbing bare metal with a wrench scratches finishes fast, and there's no reason to risk it. Turn counterclockwise. Step 2: Clean the arm

Let it run a minute or two, eyes on the connection point the whole time. A little dripping here isn't unusual on the first try — turn the water off, tighten slightly, maybe add one more wrap of tape, try again. Most leaks at this stage clear up on the second attempt.

Step 6: That's it, really

Once it's sealed up, turn the water on, and the lights should kick in on their own — powered by the flow, nothing to switch on separately. A lot of models shift color with water temperature: blue when it's cold, green in the warm range, red once it's hot. Functional, not just a party trick.

Keeping it running well

  • Wipe it down now and then to keep mineral deposits from building up, more often if your water's hard.
  • Recheck the connection a few weeks in, just to confirm nothing's loosened up.
  • Batteries? Most of these don't use any — water pressure does all the work. If yours is the exception, the manufacturer's instructions will tell you what to expect.
